JUPITER, Fla. - Orioles manager Dave Trembley said several decisions will be made after Monday's open date, and one of them likely will be the identity of the Orioles' closer -- not that there's much drama left in that decision.
The Orioles wanted George Sherrill from the Seattle Mariners for Erik Bedard because they had visions he would be their closer this season, and nothing he has done this spring has changed their mind.
Sherrill, who had a career 10.48 ERA in spring training entering this year, has allowed just one earned run, two hits and no walks in five innings."

Niet aan te slepen

Zo gebeurt er absoluut niets de afgelopen twee dagen en zo is het niet bij te houden. Allereerst verliezen ze drie van de vier laatste wedstrijden maar aangezien dit Springtraining is het resultaat niet belangrijk.

• Matt Wieters is naar het Minorleague camp gegaan. Zijn eerste trip in het ‘Grote Mannen Kamp’ is erg goed bevallen. Hij heeft veel geleerd van Hernandez en de coaches. Trembley had het volgende over hem te zeggen: Tools, good work ethic, demeanor. Like I said, and I told him today, he looked like he'd been here before," manager Dave Trembley said. "He’s receptive.
• De B. Roberts deal is on hold. Geen talk meer op het ogenblik maar ik heb nog steeds het gevoel dat hij met opening day niet op het rooster staat.
• Sidney Ponson heeft een bullpen sessie gegooid voor zes scouts in de hoop ergens een contract te verdienen. Hij heeft nog steeds een boel geld van de O’s tegoed, benieuwd of dat ooit nog loskomt.
• Troy Patton moet een operatie aan zijn linkerschouder ondergaan, Seizoen voorbij. Hij kwam als één van de keystones mee uit de Tejada trade. Bummer.
• Jay Gibbons staat geen pepernoot en is de eerste 15 wedstrijden geschorst. Toch zal die wel op het rooster voorkomen, dat 11 miljoen contract hangt als een molensteen, voor de O’s tenminste, om zijn nek.
• We hebben kaartjes voor de Kansas City Royals! Ja en, boeien, ha, ha. Nou eigenlijk wel want op 11 mei 2008 zitten wij in section 207, row E, seat 9 & 10 in het Kauffman Stadium te kijken naar de Royals tegen de Orioles!

Scott Moore

Scott Moore is the guy with the hot hands right now. We hebben hem gekregen in de trade met de Chicago Cubs vorig jaar. Zij wilde een veteraan voor het post season en aangezien wij toch nergens naar toe gingen hebben we Moore genomen. Nu ja McPhaill had dat weer uitstekend gezien.

Moore komt uit het Detroit system. Zij hebben hem gedraft in de eerste ronde in 2002 op 18 jarige leeftijd. Drie jaar later is hij getraded naar de Cubs voor Kyle Farnsworth en hij kwam dus vorig jaar over naar de O’s.

De afgelopen wedstrijden was hij telkens de beslissende factor en vandaag weer door het beslissende punt binnen te slaan. Hij vecht voor een plaats op het 25-man rooster als utility man en tot zo ver gaat hij als de brandweer.

Wordt leuk om hem te volgen deze Spring training en te zien of het hem lukt. Hij is pas 23 jaar oud.

Dat was niet best voor de eerste en zeker niet tegen een middelmatig team als de Florida Marlins. Niet alleen Adam Loewen maakte er een potje van maar ook reliever Jamie Walker was verschrikkelijk. Gave up 5 runs. Gelukkig is het Spring Traning en doen de resultaten er niet toe maar toch.

Adam maakt er een potje van is zijn eerste optreden. 39 pitches waarvan 11 strikes. Geen hits tegen maar 4 walks. Anderhalve inning.

A little Hernandez humor

"These pitchers don't like me," Hernandez said. "That's why I just like to catch. Things like that always happen to me when I hit."

Ramon is al twee keer flink geraakt aan slag.

Bierd's great escape

"It stands to reason that a team that is rebuilding around its young arms and doesn't expect to contend this season would find a way to keep a Rule 5 reliever, who is just 24 years old and has a good arm. The one thing that could change that is if Randor Bierd has a poor spring.

Bierd, the right-hander who the Orioles plucked from the Detroit Tigers' organization in December's Rule 5 draft, showed off his stuff and some good composure today. Pitching in a tie game in the bottom of the fifth inning, Bierd got out of a second-and-third-no-out jam without allowing a run.

Bierd admitted earlier this week that he was uncomfortable at first in the Orioles clubhouse because he didn't know anybody. But the pitcher, who has never pitched above Double-A, has settled in and understands the opportunity that he has."They are giving me a big chance to play in the big leagues," said Bierd, who has to stay on the Orioles' 25-man roster all season, or be offered back to the Tigers for $25,000."

Tillman

"Nobody popped the catcher's mitt as loudly as Chris Tillman. And he draws a crowd. It's like everyone who isn't throwing stops to watch him - players, coaches, team officials. This kid is impressive."

Tillman is overgekomen in de Bedard trade met Seattle, is nog pas 19.

Nadat de Orioles vorige maand een baseball school in de Dominican Republic hebben opgezet gaan ze nu ook scouten in Azie en willen eventueel ook betalen aan de clubs daar in Japan voor het recht om met spelers te praten. Het moet niet gekker worden.
